what is Linux ?

Just like Windows 7, Windows 8, and Mac OS X, Linux is also an
operating system.

Linux is a free, open-source, UNIX like operating system. As you continue to learn how to hack, you will realize how important it is to learn how to use
the Linux operating system.

Most of the server on the web run Linux
Beginner hacker should run Linux
Some of the best hacking programs only run on Linux.

A Linux distribution is the Linux kernel + a collection of Applications

Every Linux operating system has a kernel

The kernel is a computer program that manages I/O (input/output)
requests from software, and translates them into data processing instructions for the central processing unit and other electronic components of a computer.

In simple language
The kernel is the essential center of a computer operating system, the core that provides basic services for all other parts of the operating system.

The kernel is a fundamental part of a modern computer's operating system.
Even your android has a kernel So it is based on Linux

What is a “distribution?"

Linux has a number of different versions to suit nearly any type of user.
From new users to hard-core users, you’ll find a “flavor” of Linux to match your needs.

These versions are called distributions (or, in the short form, “distros.”)
Nearly every distribution of Linux can be downloaded for free, burned onto disk (or USB thumb drive),
and installed (on as many machines as you like) or Dual Boot to your computer.

Some of the famous distros are

1.Ubuntu Linux
2.Linux Mint
3.Zorin Os
4.Archi Linux
5.Red hat enterprise linux
6.Kali linux

A good way to become familiar with Linux is to download and use it at home.
Many hackers do not use Windows because of known security flaws inherent to the OS.

If you have no Linux experience, consider downloading Ubuntu.
This is a free, open-source Linux OS that shares many similarities with the familiar Windows UI  allowing even inexperienced users to grasp basic concepts quickly
